Best Guide ever! I have fished with guides from the Florida Keys to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. I had guides in the Smokies and North Florida. I liked many of them but Captain Bailey is without question (head and shoulders) above the rest. He is highly skilled and puts you on the fish. He is funny, kind, considerate and forgiving of mistakes. I had not fished with a big fly rod in 3 years and was very rusty. He is a great instructor and makes the most of the anglers limitations and weaknesses. He put me on countless big redfish, drum, sheepshead and others. I has countless shots and landed so many fish I lost count. It was a truly amazing trip that can't be described. I have fished for over 30 years consistently and have caught big, tarpon, redfish, jacks and snook but this was the BEST and most rewarding trip of my life. The fly fishing is technical and fast paced but Captain Bailey is absolute genius at reading the water and adapting to the angler. When I messed up he never said a word and just went to the next fish and next shot. He is highly confident and optimistic. He is truly a joy to be with and you cannot find a better guide overall. If you have doubts don't. Just hire him and you won't regret it. It will be fun and rewarding. I can't wait to go back again!!

From our first correspondence, it became clear that Captain Short was a guide of honesty, character, and detailed experience. When we hit the water in the morning, it became immediately evident that he knew his water, weather, and his craft. I would be in good hands. For those of us that spend more time standing in water than on a bow, getting used to line management (not standing on it) and not moving our feet when stalking, takes some time (and reminding). Captain Short was patient and good humored throughout. He was also patient with my mediocre casting, endless questions, and repeat mistakes. We worked the marsh methodically while sharing enjoyable conversations on fishing, guides, life, etc. In the end, Captain Short’s experience and persistence won the day. After a number of client-spooked fish, we finally got a beautiful black drum to hand, just before having to head in. As we idled up to the dock nearing sunset, I felt like I had just fished all day with an old friend. Now that’s a great guide.

A buddy and I spent a hot June day on the water with Bailey. We landed both reds and tailing black drum. Including a big dog at 38 lbs, wow! All around fun day, can't say enough good things about Capt. Bailey Short.

Spent an excellent day on the water with Bailey. Offered up plenty of shots at nice sized reds on a day when conditions were less than ideal. He has a great skiff for guided trips capable of making long comfortable runs. Quality rods and reels if you don't want to use your own equipment and he ties some cool flies. Most important to me though is Bailey is a young man worth spending the day on the water with. Energetic, friendly, and passionate about fishing. I live in Louisiana, have my own boat for accessing inches deep redfish rich waters, and fish every chance I can get but will not hesitate to call him up in the future when the conditions are prime for some great guided sight casting to the denizens of the marsh!

Southern Flats Louisiana Fly Fishing is relatively young (as a company) but combines tons of expertise and unparalleled knowledge of the area. If you’re looking to book a guide in New Orleans, Bailey and Southern Flats is one of the best operations in the Hopedale area. Word of advice: book early. He’s usually booked a year+ in advance.
